Pursuing God
I have been reading the book “The Pursuit of God” by A.W. Tozer. I will go ahead and put in my two cents and say that if you have not read this book or any book written by A.W. Tozer, go ahead and pick one up and let your life be changed.
Tozer says this in one of His writings, “Why do some persons FIND God in a way that others don’t? Why does God manifest His presence to some and let multitudes of others struggle along in the half-light of imperfect Christian experience? Of course, the will of God is the same for all. He has no favorites within His household. All He has ever done for any of His children He will do for all of His children. The difference lies not with God but with us.”
So if what Tozer is saying is true, then even though we are different in many ways, the one thing that brings us together is our adoption papers written on the tablets of our hearts. So let’s bring this a little closer to home. Standing in church, you have one man who is a successful business man, the man to the right a blue collar worker and one in the center a leader of the church. If you were to look at the three men and judge them by their outward appearances or by the titles that the world has given them, you could draw many conclusions. Your conclusion could be the one that is successful in finances he must be favored by God because of what we see with our eyes. Or maybe you look at the one to the right and say he is the successful one because he is living a simple life. Choice number three, the leader in the church, must be favored by God; after all he gets to labor in the house of the Lord. From the outside looking in, these are statements that we make every Sunday morning and conclusions drawn up in our own mind of minds.
What if I told you that all three men have their own personal struggles? What if I told you that all three men love God with all their hearts? Each one found God in a different way, time and setting. If we judge these men by what we see on the outside or by our own personal lives, we have missed what Tozer is trying to tell us. Here is the challenge! This has absolutely nothing to do with the three men in church but has ever thing to do with YOU. Quit concerning yourself with those who are standing around you, and quit trying to measure up to the person on your left or on your right. The difference does not lie with what has God done for them and why He hasn’t done it for me, but the understanding that He has done the exact same thing for you. Pursue God, not man!
